What is the actual difference?
During summer, a heat pump and a traditional central air conditioner perform the same basic job: they move heat from inside the home to the outdoors.
The difference appears in winter. A central air conditioner provides cooling only, so the home needs a separate heating source. A heat pump can reverse its refrigeration cycle and move available outdoor heat into the home.
